What officers assess in a visitor visa application
A visitor visa application is assessed on whether the officer is satisfied that you are a genuine temporary visitor who will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay. Officers typically consider:
- The purpose of your visit and whether it is clearly documented — an event, a family occasion, tourism plans
- Your ties to your home country: employment, business, property, family responsibilities, and ongoing commitments
- Proof of funds for the trip, and whether the source of those funds is credible and explained
- Your travel history and compliance with the immigration rules of Canada and other countries
- Your host in Canada, your relationship to them, and the support they are offering
- Your immigration history with Canada, including any prior refusals or status issues
Super visa vs. regular visitor visa for parents
If your parents or grandparents want to spend extended time with you in Canada, the super visa is often the better tool. A regular visitor visa typically allows a stay of up to six months per entry; a super visa allows much longer stays per entry and remains valid for multiple entries over several years, which suits families who want long visits without repeated extension applications.
The super visa comes with its own requirements: the host child or grandchild in Canada must meet IRCC's minimum income requirement, which is updated periodically; the applicant must hold medical insurance that meets IRCC's coverage rules; and an immigration medical examination is required. We help both sides of the family — the applicant abroad and the host in Canada — assemble a complete, credible package.
For families ultimately hoping for permanent residence, the Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program is a separate, invitation-based pathway with limited intake. Many families use a super visa for time together while they wait. We can help you understand how the two options fit your situation.
Extending your stay legally
Visitor status in Canada does not extend itself. If you want to stay longer than the period you were authorized, you must apply for a visitor record before your current status expires. Applying on time generally allows you to remain in Canada under maintained status while IRCC processes your application; applying late, or not at all, can mean losing status — which creates problems for this visit and for every future application you make.
An extension application needs a genuine, well-explained reason for the longer stay and evidence that you can support yourself. Officers also want to see that you are still a temporary visitor, not someone settling in Canada without status to do so. How much money do I need to show for a visitor visa?

What matters as much as the amount is the story the documents tell: stable income, an explained source of funds, and consistency with the rest of your application. Does an invitation letter from my relative in Canada help?
It can, if it is done well. A strong invitation letter explains the relationship, the reason and duration of the visit, where you will stay, and what support the host is providing — with evidence such as the host's status in Canada and proof of income where relevant. A vague or exaggerated letter can hurt more than help. We guide your host on what to include and what to leave out.
My visitor visa was refused. Should I just apply again?
Not before understanding why it was refused. The refusal letter is often generic, so we typically obtain the officer's notes to see the real concerns. If the weaknesses can be fixed — better evidence of ties, clearer funds, a stronger purpose of visit — a reapplication may be realistic. If they cannot, we will tell you honestly rather than take your money for a likely repeat refusal.
